You're a Woman, I'm a Machine

Death From Above 1979 - You're a Woman, I'm a Machine (2004)

DFA were from Toronto, Canada and they're the best dance punk rock band in existence. They were JFK and Seb (Jesse F. Keeler and Sebastien Grainger) and they were gods. They announced their break-up on August 4th, 2006 (but I have a theory they're secretly working on a new phenom album now..). You're a Woman, I'm a Machine (2004) is their only full-length album, but there's a remix album called Romance Bloody Romance (2005) and a couple of EPs. It'd be amazing if these guys could come back to make a little more music, but they both have other projects going on. Seb has a solo project going on and was the drummer for Femme Fatale. JFK is one-half of MSTRKRFT. However, none of these other projects amount to that one album...

Oracular Spectacular

MGMT - Oracular Spectacular (2007)

(Formerly known as the Management) MGMT is a duo from from Brooklyn, NY. Their music is alternative psychedelic indie pop punk (or whateva). They're catchy and fun to sing along to.

Numbers & Mumbles

Say Hi to Your Mom - Numbers & Mumbles (2004)

(now known simply as Say Hi but I refuse to call them that..) They're from Seattle, Washington or Brooklyn, New York (wiki is lying about one or the other) and all their album covers are so cute (god shut up). They're lo-fi indie rock that sometimes makes good background music. Numbers & Mumbles is from 2004 and they have a whole bunch more (Discosadness from 2002, Ferocious Mopes in 2005, Impeccable Blahs in 2006, and the Wishes and the Glitch in 2007...they have one coming out in 2009 called Oohs and Aahs, too).

2. A Hit in Sweden

In the Sky

Anathallo - Floating World

Anathallo comes from Michigan and Chicago, Illinois and started in 2000. They've gone through tons of member changes but still are fantastic. Floating World came out in 2006 and was preceded only by a few EPs, and followed by a couple of albums. They sound like many genres of music mixed together and each song has so many parts to it. Each song sounds completely different from start to finish.

Foe/friend

Menomena - Friend and Foe

Straight indie straight from Portland, Oregon. They started up in 2000 and have a few EPs and three full-lengths, Friend and Foe (2008) being the most recent (what's up with me putting all of their most recent even though I have others....). Their other two albums are I Am the Fun Blame Monster from 2004 and Under an Hour from 2005. They are the best at what they do.

The Black Keys - Attack and Release

This duo from Ohio create indie-rock-blues tunes that are just incredible. These cats have seven studio albums, Attack and Release (2008) being their newest (the Big Come Up 2002, Thickfreakness 2003, The Moan EP 2004, Rubber Factory 2004, Chulahoma EP 2006, and Magic Potion 2006). Their recordings are "simple, lo-fi" and that completely adds to their greatness.

Feed 'em

Girl Talk - Feed the Animals

Girl Talk is Gregg Gillis from Pittsburgh, PA. His music is a mashup of radio pop and hip-hop with oldies and some indie music mixed in. It's music for people with A.D.D. or anyone who gets bored instantly. Feed the Animals (2008) is the most recent of his three albums (Secret Diary 2002, Unstoppable 2004, Night Ripper 2006) and is the best put together in my opinion. Fun Fact: on the fourth track, What It's All About, there are 35 songs mashed together and it's only four minutes and fifteen seconds long...

Hair loss

WHY? - Alopecia

This guy/band is probably my favorite of the moment. Hailing from Oakland, CA, Yoni Wolf was 1/3 of cLOUDDEAD and now has this band with his brother and two friends. He's a part of the anticon. collective and has a ton of releases (four solo, four and some change with a full band, and various with cLOUDDEAD, Odd Nosdam and many others). I can go on and on about how Yoni's lyrics are out of this world and the music follows suit, but you just have to see for yourself. If you're going to try out any new band, let WHY? be it because you won't be let down. Also, if you do download this, I HIGHLY recommend you also purchase it because it's so amazing.

Dead eyes

+/- - X's on Your Eyes

(or Plus/Minus) These guys are pretty much an overall "indie" band, with a little "electronic" mixed in. They're from NYC and formed in 2001. X's on Your Eyes came out in 2008 on Absolutely Kosher Records with three previous full-lengths and a handful of EPs.

Cure

Foals - Antidotes

Hailing from the UK, Foals is the kind of band that just makes you want to freak out and dance like a madman. Antidotes came out in 2008 and is their first full-length. They're fun and their lyrics don't make much sense but that's okay. They also throw a lot of random elements unusual for this kind of music (but I guess it's their own now) like a small horn section (wtf?). They have a few other songs floating around out there but this is it for the most part.

Cymbals, all da time

Yeasayer - All Hour Cymbals

These lads are from Brooklyn, NY and are trippy as hell. They have a middle-eastern feel and are simply perfect. Top two favorite songs on this album are 2080 and Red Cave, but every song on this album is fantastic.

Reflected

Battles - Mirrored

This has to be one of the most talented bands I listen to. Every member of this band puts every ounce of energy he has into their live performances and they're just hands down amazing. They're mostly an instrumental band, with altered vocals scattered throughout this album (hardly any on previous works). Mirrored came out in 2007 and was preceded by a series of EPs. They're catchy without vocals (probably not easy to do) and have a huge array of influences. If you dig this album, you NEED to see them live, there's no question.

cLOUDDEAD - Ten

cLOUDDEAD was an anticon. artist including Doseone, Why?, and Odd Nosdam. They're amazing lyricists and musicians and each of their other projects are stellar. They have two full albums (Ten from 2004 and cLOUDDEAD from 2001). They broke up shortly after this release, but all continue to make music as other anticon. artists.

The New Pornographers - Challengers

This Canadian "supergroup" called The New Pornographers (ROCK AND ROLL IS THE NEW PORNOGRAPHY!) started up in '97 and has been amazing ever since. Challengers is their most recent album (2007) with three previous full-lengths. Carl (A.C.) Newman is the front man of this phenomenon and has a whole solo project under that name. In fact, each member is/has been in another great band or solo project.

Eight

Cloud Cult - The Meaning of 8

Hey Harold, here it is!
Where do I begin....Cloud Cult first came on my radar with their song "Happy Hippo" (which isn't on this album). I got a few songs here and there and finally a friend sent me this album which I didn't really enjoy until the third time through and then I LOVED it. Cloud Cult are from Minnesota and have a whole bunch of albums out starting with the Shade Project from 1994. They're a "green" band which is pretty awesome and they played at Philadelphia's Green Fest a couple of years ago.

Got some bad habits

Man Man - Rabbit Habits

At the request of Robert, here is Man Man. They're from Philadelphia and Rabbit Habits came out in 2008 and is one of the band's three full length albums (also, Six Demon Bag from 2006 and The Man in the Blue Turban With a Face from 2004). They sound like the soundtrack to a horrifying circus, like the one you'd find in a nightmare or a cheesy scary movie about a killer clown or that really old movie Freaks (1932). Anyway, Man Man rules and this album is completely phenomenal.

And so it begins...

Frightened Rabbit - The Midnight Organ Fight

(I saw this band open for the Spinto Band and they ruled so hard) Frightened Rabbits are from Scotland. The Midnight Organ Fight is their second album (number one being Sing the Greys) and has some killer songs..Actually I'd say 80% of the songs are killer, the other 20% being simply "really good".
